A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique 17-character code that serves as a car's fingerprint, providing a specific identity for each individual motor vehicle. No two vehicles in operation have the same VIN. This alphanumeric sequence contains important information about the vehicle. The VIN is essential for tasks such as registering a vehicle, obtaining insurance, tracking recalls, checking a car's history for accidents or theft, and ordering specific parts.

The VIN can be found in several locations on a vehicle, with the most common and easily accessible spot being on the driver's side dashboard, visible through the windshield from outside the car. Another standard location is on a sticker or metal plate on the driver's side door jamb (the area where the door latches when closed). For official documentation, the VIN is always printed on the vehicle's title and registration card. It may also be stamped on the engine block or the vehicle's frame in more concealed areas, primarily for verification and anti-theft purposes. A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is systematically divided into distinct sections, each revealing specific information about the vehicle. The structure is standardized globally, with the first three characters forming the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI). This section identifies the vehicle's country of origin, manufacturer, and the specific division or vehicle type. The following six characters (positions 4 through 9) are the Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS), which provides details about the model, body style, engine type, and other key features.

The final eight characters (positions 10 through 17) form the Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS). This is the unique serial number for the specific vehicle. A crucial piece of information within the VIS is the model year, located in the 10th position, and the manufacturing plant code in the 11th position. The remaining digits are a sequential production number assigned by the manufacturer.
